Phuket Big Buddha
Phuket's Big Buddha is one of the island's most important and revered landmarks. The huge image sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata and at 45 metres high it is easily seen from far away.
The lofty site offers the best 360-degree views of the island (think sweeping vistas of Phuket Town, Kata, Karon beaches, Chalong Bay and more.) Easily reachable via a six-kilometre road leading from Phuket's main artery, it's a must-visit island destination.
What to Wear
Avoid beachwear, short skirts and T-shirts with offensive texts or images. If you feel you have dressed a little too daringly for a religious site you can always ask for a sarong to cover up with from the site centre, free of charge.
Did You Know
a) Nakkerd Sea View Restaurant is located near the Big Buddha and is a nice place to chill out after visiting the site. The food there is reasonable in terms of taste and price and the view, of course, is wonderful.
b) The road to Nakkerd Hills is in good condition, most parts are newly built but it has many curves and some steep climbs. Some young tourists enjoy hiking up, even though it usually takes them over an hour to reach the top.
Opening Hours: From 08:00 – 19:30. If you want to catch the sunset from one of Thailand's best spots, try to be there before 18:30
How to get there: The road leading up to the Big Buddha is off Chao Fa Road East near Chalong. There are many red-and-white signs indicating where it is. Turn down Soi Yodsane and simply follow the indications for the next six kilometres up the hill. You can’t miss it.

Three trekking programmes are available: 30 minutes - 900 baht (adults) and 600 baht (children 4-10 years old), 45 minutes – 1,100 baht (adults) and 700 baht (children), and 60 minutes – 1,300 baht (adults) and 800 baht (children). Sea View Elephant Camp is a recent addition to the Phuket elephant-trekking scene as it opened in 2010. Located on the flank of the mountain on which Kata Viewpoint is situated, on the Nai Harn side, it is a big camp also offering activities such as ATV and paintball. They have 12 elephants ready for a trek on the mountains overlooking Chalong Bay with three programmes: 30 minutes – 900 baht (adult) and 600 (children), 45 minutes – 1,100 baht (adults) and 700 baht (children), and 60 minutes – 1,380 baht (adults) and 800 baht (children).

Safari Elephant Club - Patong
Opened in 1986, Safari Elephant Club claims to be the longest-running elephant trekking camp in Phuket. Located on the hill at the entrance of Patong Beach (when coming from Karon Beach), it may look a bit out of place at first sight due to the fact that many modern buildings have been constructed around and above it. Their elephant trekking tours take you on the mountain overlooking Relax Bay (where Le Meridien Phuket is located) on your left and Patong Bay on your right, for the following prices: 30 minutes -1,000 baht, 45 minutes – 1,200 baht, and 60 minutes – 1,500 baht (half price for children four-11 years old). They have six elephants for the treks and one baby elephant for photos.

Kathu Waterfall
At the bottom there are plenty of places to snack and buy water – essential if you’re planning to make it to the top. The beauty of it all is that Kathu Waterfall is as hard or as easy as you want it to be: If you’re with little ones then take it easy and go halfway up to the drop pool for a dip or if you like a challenge go the whole hog. But just remember to take drinking water. Nearby attractions are Palazzo – a dinner show – and Flying Hanuman – where you can zip through the jungle imitating a flying fox.
Location: Turn left at the traffic lights by the Caltex Gas Station onto Route 4020 (if coming from Patong) and continue for one kilometre until you see a black marble sign for the waterfall. Turn left again onto 'Thanon Namtokkathu' Kathu Waterfall, Street.
Jet Ski
Prices
A session of 30 minutes costs from 800 up to 1,500 baht depending on when, where and which jet-ski operators you talk to. But you might come across advertising brochures quoting jet-ski rental rates as 1,500 baht for 30 minutes, 2,000 baht for 40 minutes, and 3,000 baht for 60 minutes. An extra rider costs 200 baht.
Kite Surfing
Kitesurfing is presently one of the fastest growing extreme sports in Phuket and the island has all it takes to be a popular location for many kitesurf enthusiasts.
Beginners appreciate the shallow waters and gentle breezes of the southeast coast while over at Nai Yang and Layan beaches in northwest Phuket, more practiced kitesurfers really let rip with acrobatic stunts.
Kitesurfing is not the sort of sport that one can just grab some gear and head out; indeed it can be dangerous to attempt it without any basic knowledge. There are a few centres in Phuket where you can apply for kitesurfing lessons and you should choose between a one-on-one lesson with an instructor or a shared class – usually two students to one teacher – at a better price.
The centres offering kitesurfing lessons are:

Flying Hanuman
Flying Hanuman in Kathu is just the right place for you if you’re the type of person who loves to zip through the sky 40 metres above a jungle. Eco-friendly and well executed, Flying Hanuman explores the jungle in a decidedly aerial way.
We arrive at a lobby thronging with participants and have a quick look around. The place is superbly designed, with artistic touches here and there, immaculate toilets and a restaurant to the left of the lobby. We then watch a safety-and-information DVD on a 40” flat screen TV incongruously hanging in a bamboo-and-thatch hut that is so well done that it gains a round of applause from a rowdy group of students.

Paradise Beach
good for snorkeling
With views out over Patong Bay and situated about five kilometres southwest of Patong, you get to Paradise by heading south along the last stretch of Patong's Beach Road to Amari Coral Beach Resort, taking a left at the fork and going past Baan Yin Dee up on the hill.
- Wear thick sunscreen or/and a T-shirt; the sun’s rays are magnified by water
- Be wary of jet-skis and make yourself as visible as possible while snorkelling
- Always defog your mask before diving. No use swimming amongst beautiful tropical fish if you can’t see them
- Kicking from the hip is the most effective way to use your fins
- Please do not touch coral under any circumstances
Situated about five kilometres southwest of Patong, you get to Paradise by heading south along the last stretch of Patong's Beach Road to Amari Coral Beach Resort, taking a left at the fork and going past Baan Yin Dee up on the hill.
Drive past the entrance to Tri Trang Resort, and pass Merlin Beach Resort and follow the road to Emerald Bay (Naik Rang). There's a steep gradient and the road is not so wide and is certainly twisty but keep on going until it finally swoops down into Paradise car park.
Paradise Beach Activities
Activities include snorkeling (rentals go for: mask 100 baht, fins 80 baht and snorkel 20 baht an hour) sea kayaking (400 baht an hour) and body boarding (100 baht an hour).
There are longtail boats for hire (price negotiable) but these vessels will not go out if the waves in Patong Bay are too high. The coral reef is Paradise's main aquatic attraction. The beach opens at 00:09 and closes at 18:30. There are no beach vendors here.
A medium-sized and reasonably priced restaurant stands back in a grove of trees towards the car park. Beachgoers can sample Thai and international fare with the onus on seafood.
You can also order a meal and drinks from your sun bed as well as dining at tables set nearer the sea. The restaurant hires out snorkeling sets and other water sports accessories.
Kalim Beach
Kalim Beach is located just north of Patong Beach and, unlike its famous neighbour, still retains some of its local Thai touches. A concrete parking and vendor space at its southern end in front of the local school cuts the beach into two parts and hosts a popular small street food market with half-a-dozen stands selling mataba, noodle soup, roti, Thai ice-creams and other delicacies, as well as soft drinks.
Kalim Beach itself is pretty rocky and not very attractive for swimmers, even though some snorkelling is possible at high tide. The highlight of the beach is surfing in low season. Kalim is considered one of the best surfing spots in Phuket, and some competitions – such as the Quiksilver Thailand Competition in 2012 – are held there. Another activity at Kalim, albeit up the road on the hillside this time, is the exhilarating Zorbing at Rollerball.
Kalim is also famous for its fine-dining venues: Acqua, White Box, Lim’s, and the eclectic Brush, are well-respected restaurants – each with their own particular atmosphere, décor and cuisine.
Freedom Beach
Freedom Beach is an exclusive gem on Phuket’s west coast; the 300m-long strip of white sand is set in a superb bay dotted with granite rocks and surrounded by hills covered by thick and luxuriant jungle. Essentially, Freedom Beach’s exclusivity comes from its rather difficult accessibility, although things are getting a bit better nowadays.
A Go-Go Show
Patong’s A Go-Go bars are the main reason some people head there in the first place – they feature sexy, scantily-clad young girls swaying to the music. A Go-Go bars aren't the raunchy circuses they used to be but they still provide plenty to look at. According to Thai law, total nudity is banned but in some establishments these rules are often bent, if not outright ignored.
Before continuing, here are a few phrases to help you understand better:
- A Go-Go Bar: An enclosed place where girls dance on the stage and perform various types of naughty shows a regular times.
- Beer Bar: An open-air bar surrounded by girls calling you 'handsome man' with a big convincing smile, inviting you to drink there and more.
- Soi: A small backstreet street or lane.
- Ping Pong Show: A show performed by a lady involving ping pong balls, but not the way you remember it played at school.
- Lady Drink: A small drink, probably more expensive than yours. The more drinks you offer to the lady, the more attention she will pay you. Look at it as a fee.
How Much?
Prices seem to differ from place to place, more often charging around 100 baht for a small bottled beer and others, for some reason, have a high entry fee – sometimes up to 500 baht. Most will invite you to 'have a look inside' before deciding if it is worth the price or not, so don't hesitate to do so.
The Show
Depending on the time and the place, shows are performed once every 30 minutes or so but you might have to wait a while if the management feels the imminent presence of the law. Sometimes the show might not happen at all, but that is quite unusual.
- The Ping Pong Show: A classic... A show performed by a naked lady, usually more mature than and not as sexy as the dancers. The show not only involves ping pong balls, but also all kinds of other interesting accessories such as goldfish, birds, unopened beer bottles, balloons and even darts to name but a few. If you visit different Go-Go bars, you might see the same lady again as they seem to rotate as these kind of skills are not acquired overnight!
- The Bath Show: This will probably involve you, so don't be shy, nothing really seriously embarrassing happens… but stay in the background if you are ‘going commando’ or not wearing underpants. If one of your friends is selected, you will be disappointed that photos are not allowed.
- Body painting in black light: the artistic moment of the show. It’s actually quite impressive considering than an artist will paint complicated floral patterns on a girl's body in three minutes of almost total darkness.
- The girls shows: Involving two or more amorous girls… enough said.
Which?
A Go-Go Bars look often look very similar but some try little ‘extras’ to stand out from the crowd. Here is a list of popular Go-Go Bars:

Tiger Complex
Tiger Disco is a large entertainment complex located on Patong Beach’s infamous Bangla Road. Opened in 2013, after the previous Tiger Disco situated on the other side of the road had a fire at the end of 2012, this venue has learned from its mistakes and nowadays offers a safer environment for partygoers.
You simply can’t miss Tiger Disco: the imposing complex covers some 5,000sqm on three floors. The building is fitted out with cement décor with large concrete tigers overlooking the street from the second floor. The place offers at least three types of entertainment: girl hunting (or being hunted by girls, according to one’s character and taste), pool, and getting down to live music. Read More...

Jungceylon Shopping Complex
Standing downtown, diagonally opposite Bangla Road, the Jungceylon Shopping Complex has radically changed the face of shopping in Patong. The two main stores in the complex are Robinson - a gleaming well-lit upper end department store, and Big C supermarket.
The 200-plus other stores in this shopping heaven sell brand-name clothes, spectacles, sunglasses, cosmetics and perfumes, shoes, DVDs, computer games, tons of mobile phones and accessories, electrical goods but it is also a great entertainment haven with a five-room SF Cinema and a 16-lane bowling alley, perfect for rainy days or to escape the heat of the day.

Bangla Road
Must go to experience how horrible it is
Like all night owls, Soi Bangla awakens when the sun sets. That's when Patong's liveliest party zone becomes closed to traffic and ready for action! Famous for its raunchy nightlife, Bangla goes all out to entertain with girls, beers and music that increases in volume as the moon rises. Jammed most nights year round, it's actually totally unthreatening and lively place to walk around as bars compete for customers.
The girls aim to please - dancing around poles, engaging in banter, or coaxing customers to play simple bar games like "Connect" or "Hammer the nail" to break the ice. The objective is to entice customers to buy drinks and hopefully, take them away for the evening.
Almost all of the bars are outdoors so the music from each one is deafening! Beers Bar occupy most of the street's length, with several a-go-gos and a few pubs, restaurants, discos and shops rounding out the attractions both on Bangla and down its side streets.

The Kee Resort

The Kee Resort is a modern establishment set at the northern entrance of the famous Soi Sea Dragon, certainly the most looked-after lane off Bangla Road, renowned for hosting venues colourfully named Suzy Wong, Club Lover, Exotica or Devil’s Playground; venues at which barely clothed young women languorously ‘shake their booty’ to be invited by punters for a drink and more if affinity...
Despite its very close proximity to what some would call depravity, The Kee Resort is a stylish four-star residence featuring all that is required for a great stay in Patong, from perfectly appointed rooms to excellent facilities and services to its superb rooftop restaurant – The Kee Sky Lounge – which not only offers stunning views to Patong Bay, but also delectable cocktails and fare.
